Irises by Van Gogh

Where can I see "Irises" by Vincent van Gogh in Person?

If you are a fan of Vincent van Gogh, and want to see all of his famous paintings, then the "Irises" should be on your list. He painted this when he was about a month into his stay at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France in 1889. He used the hospital's gardens as inspiration and said that painting was a form of respite from his mental illness.

In 1990, "Irises" was sold to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and you can still see it there to this day. It is in the Museum West Pavilion in Gallery W204, alongside other famous impressionist and post-impressionist artists.

Seeing the Irises in person is always a special experience. I always find it funny to realize how big an actual painting is after only seeing photos of it online. I love walking up as close as possible to see the strokes in his work. He used the impasto technique which gives the painting so much depth and texture - something that you can't really see in a photo online.

So if you ever find yourself in Los Angeles, try to make time to go to The Getty! It is also free! No entry or admission fees - you just need to reserve a time slot. This is amazing since you can see so much more art here from not only famous artists from the past, but also contemporary art with rotating exhibitions all the time, so you can always see something new when you visit.
