A 3-Day Itinerary for Busan, South Korea: Exploring the Coastal Gem

Busan, South Korea's second-largest city, is a captivating blend of bustling urban life and serene coastal beauty. From stunning beaches and historic temples to vibrant markets and delicious cuisine, Busan has something for every traveler. Here's a 3-day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit to this dynamic city.

Day 1: Delicious Seafood & Colorful Neighborhood

Morning: Arrive and settle in. Walk around the city.

Afternoon: Visit Jagalchi Fish Market

The Jagalchi Fish Market is South Korea’s largest seafood market. Wander through the stalls filled with fresh fish and seafood, it's especially lively in the morning. You can buy directly with the vendors and take them to the 2nd floor to prepare for you. However, you can also go directly to the restaurant and order with them, which is easier and cheaper, as they all have the same menu and prices.
You can try all sorts of sea food delicacies like soy marinated crab, raw octopus, grilled or raw abalone, and grilled scallops. Adults can also order beer for the full experience!
Tip: If you plan to shop with vendors, bring cash as some vendors might not accept credit cards. Also, try to arrive early to see the market at its liveliest.
Alternative: Lunch at BIFF Square
If wet markets and seafood isn't your jam, make your way to BIFF Square, a bustling area famous for its street food and shopping. Try some tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), hotteok (sweet pancakes), or eomuk (fish cake).

Late Afternoon: Explore Gamcheon Culture Village

Head to Gamcheon Culture Village, a colorful hillside community known for its narrow streets, brightly painted houses, and eclectic art installations. Take your time exploring the winding alleys and enjoy the stunning views of the city and sea.
Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking on uneven surfaces and stairs.

Evening: Relax at a Korea Spa

After a day of travel and walking, enjoy a well deserved rest at a Korean Spa. If you haven't been, there are large ones that almost feel like an amusement park, filled with multiple springs, different themed rooms, saunas, scrub treatments, and even cafeterias with food and drinks. We went to SPA LAND Centum City and Hurshimchung Spa is another popular choice.
Tip: There are certain areas like gender separated hot springs that are fully nude, but other areas like foot baths, saunas and lounge areas are are clothed and shared if you are traveling with a partner. They will provide clothes to change into and an electronic bracelet to keep track of food expenses.

Day 2: Historical and Cultural Immersion

Morning: Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Begin your day with a visit to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, a breathtaking Buddhist temple situated on a cliff overlooking the sea. The temple’s scenic beauty and serene atmosphere make it a perfect place for reflection and photography.
Tip: Dress modestly out of respect for the religious site and be prepared for a bit of a climb to reach the temple.
There are a number of vendors outside and I recommend picking a sweet snack of freshly fried hotteok - a pancake filled with brown sugar and nuts.

Afternoon: Relax at Haeundae Beach

Haeundae Beach is Busan’s most famous beach. Relax on the sandy shores, take a dip in the sea, or simply enjoy the bustling beach atmosphere. There's many restraunts and attractions in the area, I recommend booking tickets the the Sky Capsule in advance to ride the colorful capsules along the coastal scenic route. You book tickets for one way so make sure to plan the trip back or even book a later ticket to enjoy lunch in between. Enjoy a relaxing stroll along Dongbaekseom walking trail for a beautiful view of the water and city.
Tip: There are a number of bars and restraunts in this area with beautiful views of the marina and skyline like, like the The Bay 101 and Amitis Sky Lounge (pictured above)
Alternatively, get away from the crowd by going to Igidae Coastal Walk for a less touristy and more nature focused hike.

Book Sky Capsule rides in advance as they tend to sell out.

Evening: Gwangalli Beach / Explore Seomyeon District

If you aren't beached out, Gwangalli is lively day and night with many restaurants and cafes. If the weather is warm you can also swim at the beach and have a great view of the Gwangan Bridge.
Tip: For the best views, find a spot at one of the cafes or bars with outdoor seating.
If you are tired, head back to the hotel for a rest before dining and enjoying the nightlife of the lively Seomyeon District, Busan’s entertainment and nightlife hub. Explore the myriad of shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s a great place to find some souvenirs and enjoy the vibrant city atmosphere.
Tip: For a unique dining experience, visit a pojangmacha (street food tent) and try some Korean street food.

Day 3: Modern Attractions and Natural Beauty

Morning: Hike Up to Beomeosa Temple

Gead to Beomeosa Temple, located on the slopes of Geumjeongsan Mountain. This historic temple offers not only spiritual solace but also incredible views and hiking opportunities.
Tip: Allocate enough time to explore the temple grounds and perhaps even embark on a short hike in the surrounding area.

Afternoon: Lunch at Millak Waterfront Park

For lunch, visit Millak Waterfront Park, located near Gwangalli Beach. This area is known for its raw fish restaurants and stunning ocean views. Enjoy a fresh seafood meal while overlooking the water.
Tip: Try a sashimi platter, which is a popular choice here.
After lunch you can walk Through Dongbaekseom Island, a scenic park connected to Haeundae Beach. Stroll along the coastal trail, visit the Nurimaru APEC House, and enjoy the lush greenery and sea views.
Tip: The walk is relatively easy, but make sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Evening:

Spend the rest of the day visiting any last beaches or attractions you didn't get to earlier. Or go shopping for souvenirs in the Seomyeon District.

Alternative day: Day trip to Gyeongju:

Take a day trip to Gyeongju, a historical city know for cultural sites. It's only a ~30 minute ride with KTX train ($19).

View relics of the Silla kingdom, explore Tumuli Park, the ancient astronomical observatory Cheomseongdae Observatory, and UNESCO listed Woljeonggyo Bridge.

Where to Stay in Busan

We opted to stay at the Busan Business Hotel for an affordable and centrally located hotel. We loved the area and recommend looking for hotels in the Seomyeon district as it was easily accessible by subway and busses, and there are many shops, restaurants and convenience stores nearby. In addition, there are red tents called pojangmacha which serve street food and drinks for a unique evening!

Helpful Tips for Americans Traveling to Korea

Currency: The local currency is the Korean Won (KRW). It’s useful to carry some cash, especially for smaller purchases and in markets. Credit cards are widely accepted in most places.
Language: While many young people in Busan speak some English, it’s helpful to learn a few basic Korean phrases or use a translation app.
Transportation: Busan has an efficient public transportation system, including subways and buses. Consider getting a T-money card for convenient travel.
